EMPLOYEES STATE INSURANCE CORPORATION:
The administration of the ESI Scheme under the Act is entrusted to an
autonomous body called the ESI Corporation. The Union Minister for Labour is the Chairman
and the Secretary to Govt. of India Ministry of Labour is the Vice-Chairman of this
corporation. It consists of members representing Central and State Governments, employers
and employees organizations, medical profession and Parliament. There is a Standing
Committee, constituted from the members of the Corporation, which acts as an executive
body for the administration of the Scheme. The chief executive officer of the Corporation
is the Director General who is assisted by four Principal Officer a) Insurance
Commissioner b) Medical Commissioner c) Financial Commissioner d) Actuary. There is a
Medical Benefit Council, which is headed by the Director General of Health Services,
Government of India, which is assisted by the Medical Commissioner in all matters relating
to medical relief. For the day-to-day administration, State-wise Regional Offices and
Sub-Regional Offices have been set up at Faridabad, Poona, Nagpur, Provisions (Goa),
Bhubneshwar, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Madurai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hubli, Mumbai,
Calcutta, Delhi, Gauhati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Chennai, Patna and Trichur.
Under the Regional Offices, there are several local offices to receive claim of insured
persons and to pay them cash benefits. There are Inspection Officers throughout the
country to inspect factories and for checking insurability of employees and correct
payment of contributions.
